What is occupational therapy?
Occupational Therapy aims to promote health by enabling a person to perform meaningful and purposeful activities across their lifespan. These activities include taking care of oneself (and others), working, volunteering and participating in hobbies, interests and social events.
Occupational Therapy is a client centred health profession that involves ongoing assessments to understand what activities the person can do (and those they want to do), any current limitations, the person’s goals / motivations and also to offer advice / techniques about how to do something more easily and safely. For a person with a spinal cord injury, this can be achieved through retraining in daily life activities including self-care, work and leisure roles, provision of specialist equipment to facilitate independence and environmental modifications to improve access to the home or workplace.
What are the benefits of occupational therapy?
The aim of Occupational Therapy is to increase the person’s participation and performance in specific daily tasks and life roles which are important to the individual. Benefits of Occupational Therapy intervention may include:
• Increased independence in daily living tasks such as self-care or meal preparation activities.
• Increased social participation and engagement in leisure activities.
• Return to work or driving.
• Independent access within the home or workplace.
• Improved quality of life.
